A vaporizer is a device used to heat plant matter, usually cannabis, tobacco, or herbs, to a precise temperature at which the active compounds of the plant material are vaporized, or turned into a gas, to be inhaled.

Vaporization serves as an alternative to smoking which is the burning and inhalation of both plant matter and active compounds at very high temperatures. Vaporization is considered better than smoking by a number of people because it reduces and can virtually eliminate the inhalation of irritating or toxic by-products in smoke. Because they heat the plant matter to very specific temperatures vaporizers work by boiling or vaporizing only the active ingredients. No combustion or burning of plant matter occurs.

By heating plant matter to the temperature needed to vaporize only the wanted compounds there is no need for combustion.

Most vaporizers work by heating plant matter and then passing the resulting vapor either through a tube to be inhaled immediately or into a bag to be consumed leisurely. Since there is normally very little smoke produced the smoker can enjoy cooler temperatures and a much smoother hit. Fans of vaporization cite several advantages including stronger effects from the active compounds and quicker onset as compared to delivery methods such as eating. As an additional benefit the detrimental effects of second hand smoke are significantly reduced.
