Homemade Vaporizer
If you do not want to spend the money for a brand name vaporizer and are capable of constructing small devices or machines you may be able to make your own vaporizer at home. Vaporization enthusiasts have successfully constructed vaporizers out of many different materials and can be simple designs or complex constructions. If you attempt a homemade vaporizer you should be careful. Depending on the materials and heat source you use there is a risk of injury.

If you do think you have the required skill to create a vaporizer at home you are limited only by the materials at your disposal and your ability. Vaporization is the process of heating plant matter to specific temperatures to release desired compounds. Any device that is used to accomplish this is a vaporizer. When constructing a vaporizer the primary consideration is what type; conduction or convection. These terms describe the heating process, conduction is a device that must have physical contact with the plant material while convection vaporizers are able to heat just by passing air over and around the material. Many people prefer convection because it more evenly vaporizes the active compounds, is easier to maintain at a consistent temperature, and offers a purer vapor. The drawback is that they can be more difficult to make because it requires hot air to be moved over herbs that are suspended somehow.
Whether you decide to build a conduction or convection device the next concern is a heat source. Many of the desired compounds found in popular herbs have a boiling point in a range from 350 – 390 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that your heating source needs to be able to heat up to at least that temperature. Open flame can be used and is with some types of vaporizers. Some people use accessories for existing smoking pieces such as pipes or bongs and turn them into vaporizers. These devices usually work by preventing flames to directly contact herbs which instead are heated in flame resistant chambers. Vaporizer bowls are constructed of flame resistance materials such as metal, ceramic, or glass and are what allows the herbs to be gradually heated instead of combusted.
Other more complex devices use electricity either from a plug or battery. Many of these home made vaporizers use soldering irons. These are normally plug in units and use
the heat generated by the tip of soldering iron or similar device to heat the plant matter. The heating element is secured near a bowl that contains herbs and within a container or receptacle which in turn is connected to a hose or mouthpiece. As the heating element raises the temperature of the surrounding air the desired compounds on the herb boil off and the resulting vapor is collected before being inhaled. The important thing with these and similar designs is to use materials that can withstand extreme heat repeatedly. Many materials will breakdown and can even emit toxic substances as they decay, they very thing you are trying to avoid by building a vaporizer. There are specialized glass and plastics that are specifically made for laboratory and manufacturing functions and are safe to use.
Forced air vaporizers are preferred by many enthusiasts and not only heat air to precise temperature but also actively blow the heated air. This ensures thorough vaporization of the herb and the vapor is conveniently sent to a bag or hose for inhalation. Forced air does require some machinery and industrial heat guns perform the function well for many people. They can often be set to precise temperatures and provide more than enough power. It can be tricky to capture and control the vapor generated by them. Creating a valve from scratch is very difficult, fortunately there are specialized valve systems made by a number of manufacturers that do the job very well.
If you are looking to start vaporizing your herb of choice the three main ingredients are a heat source, a receptacle, and the herb itself. Get those three elements set up accordingly and you can say good bye to combustion.
